RESUMO

Cyanide extraction dominates the gold smelting industry, which leads to the generation of large amounts of cyanide-containing wastewater. In this study, Aneurinibacillus tyrosinisolvens strain named JK-1 was used for cyanide wastewater biodegradation. First, we tested the performance of JK-1 in degrading cyanide under different conditions. Then, we screened metabolic compounds and pathways associated with cyanide degradation by JK-1. Finally, we explored the potential JK-1-mediated cyanide degradation pathway. Our results showed that the optimal pH and temperature for cyanide biodegradation were 7.0 and 30 °C, respectively; under these conditions, a degradation rate of >98% was achieved within 48 h. Untargeted metabolomics results showed that increased cyanide concentration decreased the abundance of metabolic compounds by 71.1% but upregulated 32 metabolic pathways. The Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes enrichment results revealed significant changes in amino acid metabolism pathways during cyanide degradation by JK-1, including cyanoamino acid metabolism, ß-alanine metabolism, and glutamate metabolism. Differential metabolic compounds included acetyl-CoA, l-asparagine, l-glutamic acid, l-phenylalanine, and l-glutamine. These results confirmed that cyanide degradation by JK-1 occurs through amino acid assimilation. This study provides new insights into the mechanism of cyanide biodegradation, which can be applied in the treatment of cyanide wastewater or tailings.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Paragangliomas are rare neuroendocrine tumors. We hereby report a case of a localized paraganglioma found in the abdominal cavity, and review the relevant literature to improve the understanding of this disease. CASE SUMMARY: A 29-year-old Chinese female patient was referred to our hospital due to an abdominal mass found on physical examination. Imaging revealed a mass in the left upper abdomen, suggestive of either a benign stromal tumor or an ectopic accessory spleen. Laparoscopic radical resection was subsequently performed, and histopathological analysis confirmed the diagnosis of a paraganglioma. The patient was followed up 3 months post-operation, and reported good recovery with no metastasis. CONCLUSION: Radical resection can effectively treat intra-abdominal paragangliomas, with few side effects and low recurrence risk. In addition, early and accurate diagnosis and timely intervention are essential for the prognosis of this disease.

RESUMO

Conventional compost sludge has a long fermentation period and is not nutrient rich. Potassium-rich mining waste was used as an additive for aerobic composting of activated sludge to make a new sludge product. The effects of different feeding ratios of potassium-rich mining waste and activated sludge on the physicochemical properties and thermophilic bacterial community structure during aerobic composting were investigated. The results showed that potassium-rich waste minerals contribute to the increase in mineral element contents; although the addition of potassium-rich waste minerals affected the peak temperature and duration of composting, the more sufficient oxygen content promoted the growth of thermophilic bacteria and thus shortened the overall composting period. Considering the requirements of composting temperature, it is recommended that the addition of potassium-rich waste minerals is less than or equal to 20%.

RESUMO

PURPOSES: Transcriptomics-based analysis of key transcriptional molecules in the pathogenesis of trigeminal neuropathic pain was conducted to screen key molecules in the pathogenesis of trigeminal neuralgia. METHODS: Rat trigeminal nerve pathological pain model, namely chronic constriction injury of distal infraorbital nerve (IoN-CCI), was constructed and animal behaviors postsurgery were observed and analyzed. Trigeminal ganglia were collected for RNA-seq transcriptomics analysis. StringTie was used to annotate and quantify genome expression. DESeq2 was applied to compare between groups with P value less than 0.05 and fold change greater than 2 times and less than 0.5 times to screen differential genes, and display them with volcano graphs and cluster graphs. ClusterProfiler software was used to perform GO function enrichment analysis of differential genes. RESULTS: On the fifth postoperative day (POD5), the rat's face-grooming behavior increased to a peak; on the seventh postoperative day (POD7), the von-frey value dropped to the lowest value, indicating that the mechanical pain threshold of rats was significantly decreased. RNA-seq analysis of IoN-CCI rat ganglia found that the significantly up-regulated signaling pathways included B cell receptor signaling pathway, cell adhesion, complement and coagulation cascade pathways; significantly down-regulated pathways were related to systemic lupus erythematosus. Multiple genes among Cacna1s, Cox8b, My1, Ckm, Mylpf, Myoz1, Tnnc2 were involved in mediating the occurrence of trigeminal neuralgia. CONCLUSIONS: B cell receptor signaling pathway, cell adhesion, complement and coagulation cascade pathways, neuroimmune pathways are closely related to the occurrence of trigeminal neuralgia. The interaction of multiple genes among Cacna1s, Cox8b, My11, Ckm, Mylpf, Myoz1, Tnnc2 leads to the occurrence of trigeminal neuralgia.

RESUMO

Background: Balloon compression (BC) is a simple and effective operation to treat trigeminal neuralgia (TN). The most difficult procedure in BC is related to fast and accurate foramen ovale (FO) insertion. In this study, we introduced a new method incorporating a personalized tooth-supported digital guide plate to reduce patient trauma, improve the accuracy and the success rate of insertion, and reduce surgeons' radiation exposure. Methods: In total, 15 TN patients aged 55-70 years were recruited between January 2019 and November 2020 and retrospectively analyzed. Before the operation, based on Mimics 3D reconstruction and the modeling of patients' maxillary teeth, personalized tooth-supported digital guide plates were designed and 3D printed. All operational procedures were simulated. Then, all patients underwent BC with a personalized tooth-supported digital guide plate. Results: In the study, guide plate insertion was completed within 60 seconds for all patients. Puncturing time was limited to 5 seconds. Successful insertion into the FO was achieved in 1 attempt for all 15 participants. No patients required more than 3 postinsertion adjustments to obtain a pear-shaped balloon. There were no postoperative complications, such as cerebrospinal fluid leakage, intracranial infection, or visual acuity change. The trigger points, attack frequency per day, attack duration, and Barrow Neurological Institute (BNI) pain intensity scores of all 15 participants were significantly improved postoperation. The visual analog scale (VAS) score significantly decreased postoperation compared with that obtained preoperation (all P<0.001) and gradually decreased with the extension of follow-up time. Conclusions: By applying a personalized tooth-supported digital guide plate, we can significantly avoid the use of an incision outside the mouth, decrease the difficulty of FO insertion, and reduce patient trauma. The operation is more suitable for novice surgeons and protects surgeons from the harm of radiation. This new technology may improve the success rate and accuracy of FO insertion, although a multicenter, large sample, randomized controlled trial is needed.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: To investigate microstructural alterations of white matter in retinal vein occlusion (RVO) patients by tract-based spatial statistics (TBSS) and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). Material/Methods. DTI was performed on 14 RVO patients and 14 normal controls (HCs). We measured and recorded fractional anisotropy (FA) and radial diffusivity (RD) of white matter fibers and classified them through the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve and correlation analysis, respectively. RESULTS: The mean FA value of white matter in RVO patients is lower than the HCs, and the mean RD value in RVO patients increased, especially in the bilateral posterior thalamic, bilateral sagittal stratum, body of corpus callosum, cingulum, and fornix. The ROC curve of different brain regions showed high accuracy. Moreover, the mean FA and RD values were significantly correlated with visual and psychological disorders. CONCLUSION: TBSS could be regarded as an important method to reveal the alterations of white matter in RVO patients, indicating the underlying neurological mechanism of the RVO.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Numerous anterior neuroimaging researches have revealed that corneal ulcers (CU) are related to changes in cerebral anatomic structure and functional area. Nonetheless, functional characteristics of the brain's network organization still show no definite research results. The study was designed to confirm CU-associated spatial centrality distribution functional network of the whole cerebrum and explore the mechanism through which the larvaceous changed the intrinsic functional hubs. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this study, 40 patients with CU and 40 normal controls (matched in sex, age, and education level) were enrolled in this study to undergo resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scans. The differences between the groups were determined by measuring the voxel-wise degree centrality (DC) throughout the whole cerebrum. For the purpose of assessing the correlation between abnormal DC value and clinical variables, the Linear correlation analysis was used. RESULTS: Compared with normal controls (NCs), CU patients revealed high DC values in the frontal lobe, precuneus, inferior parietal lobule, posterior cingulate, occipital lobe, and temporal lobe in the brain functional connectivity maps throughout the brain. The intergroup differences also had high similarity on account of different thresholds. In addition, DC values were positively related to the duration of CU in the left middle frontal gyrus. CONCLUSIONS: The experimental results revealed that patients with CU showed spatially unnatural intrinsic functional hubs whether DC values increased or decreased. This brings us to a new level of comprehending the functional features of CU and may offer useful information to make us obtain a clear understanding of the dysfunction of CU.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Sjögren syndrome (SjS) is a systemic disease affecting exocrine, including ocular lacrimal, glands. It is uncertain whether ocular microvascular alterations are associated with this disease. In this study, we evaluated retinal and conjunctival microvascular changes in SjS patients using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA). METHODS: Twelve SjS patients (24 eyes) and 12 normal controls (24 eyes) were recruited to this study. Three-dimensional conjunctival and retinal OCTA images of each eye were captured and microvascular density was calculated. Each image was analyzed by retinal area based on the early treatment of diabetic retinopathy study method (R, S, L, and I) hemisphere segmentation method (SR, SL, IL, and IR); and central wheel division method (C1-C6). Correlation analyses were used to look for associations between retinal and conjunctival microvascular densities. RESULTS: Superficial and deep retinal layer microvascular density was decreased in SjS patients compared with normal controls (P<0.05). This significant difference was found in both superficial and deep layers in S, L, SL, IL and C1-C3 regions, and additionally in the I and SR regions in the superficial layer. Conversely, in the conjunctiva microvascular density was higher in SjS patients than in controls. In SjS patients, a significant negative correlation was found between conjunctival and both superficial (r=-0.641; P=0.025) and deep (r=-0.958; P<0.0001) microvascular densities. CONCLUSIONS: The changed microvascular densities measured in deep and superficial retinal layers and in the conjunctiva demonstrate that OCTA is a promising method in differentiating the eyes from those with SjS.

RESUMO

Process intensification, targeting the maximization of spatial-temporal productivity utilizing minimum energy and resources has always been the constant trends especially in chemical industry. In this regard, tandem reactions that are able to perform a multi-step reaction in a single pot by eliminating costly separation steps have been viewed as a typical paradigm. However, a spatial isolation of varied active sites with a controlled manner in a single catalyst to avoid deactivation and work synergistically is a challenging problem yet sometimes being overlooked. In this work, a spatial base-metal core-shell structured catalyst with wrinkled surface was successfully fabricated by a direct homoepitaxial growth method in an acid/water system, which exhibited increased hydrophobicity, exposure of active sites and significantly improved product selectivity towards one-pot Knoevenagel condensation-hydrogenation tandem reaction compared with the uncoated catalyst. Meanwhile, the catalytic performance was largely retained and the structural stability was maintained even after successive 8 cycles, which shows great promise for industrial applications.

RESUMO

This study investigated functional alterations in the cerebral network of patients with hypertensive retinopathy (HR) by resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) and degree centrality (DC) methods. 31 patients with HR along with 31 healthy controls (HC) closely matched in gender and age were enrolled for the research. All participants were examined by rs-fMRI, and the DC method was applied to evaluate alterations in spontaneous cerebral activity between the 2 groups. We used the independent samples t test to evaluate demographic and general information differences between HR patients and HCs. The 2-sample t test was used to compare the DC values of different cerebral regions between the 2 groups. The accuracy of differential diagnostic HR was analyzed by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve method for rs-fMRI DC values changes. Pearson's correlation coefficient was applied to determine the correlation between differences in DC in specific cerebral areas and clinical manifestation. Results showed that DC values were higher in the left cerebellum posterior lobe (LCPL), left medial occipital gyrus (LMOG), and bilateral precuneus (BP) of HR patients compared to HCs. Mean DC values were lower in the right medial frontal gyrus/bilateral anterior cingulate cortex of HR patients. Anxiety and depression scores were positively correlated with DC values of LMOG and LCPL, respectively. Bilateral best-corrected visual acuity in HR patients was negatively correlated with the DC value of BP. Hence, changes in DC in specific cerebral areas of patients with HR reflect functional alterations that provide insight into the pathophysiologic mechanisms of HR.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The percent amplitude of fluctuation (PerAF) method was used to study the changes in neural activities and functions in specific brain regions of patients with a retinal detachment (RD). PATIENTS AND METHODS: In this study, we recruited 15 RD patients (nine males and six females) and 15 healthy controls (HCs) matched for gender, age, and weight. All participants were scanned with resting functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI). The PerAF method was then used for data analysis to evaluate and detect changes in neural activity in relevant brain regions. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was used to evaluate the two groups. RESULTS: The PerAF signal values of the right fusiform gyrus and the left inferior temporal gyrus of RD patients were significantly higher than those of HCs. This may indicate changes in neural activity and function in the related brain regions. The anxiety and depression scores of hospital anxiety and depression scale (HADS) and the durations in RD patients were positively correlated with the PerAF values of the left inferior temporal gyrus. CONCLUSION: In this study, we demonstrated that there were significant changes in the PerAF values in specific areas of the brain in patients with RD. The change of PerAF values represent the changes of BOLD signal intensity, which reflect the hyperactivity or weakening of specific brain regions in RD patients, which are helpful to predict the development and prognosis of RD patients, and play an important role in the early diagnosis of RD. In addition, according to the results, changes in neural activity in specific brain regions of RD patients increase the risk of brain dysfunction related diseases, which may help to understand the pathological mechanism of vision loss in RD patients.

RESUMO

Carbon-based nanomaterials have been widely utilized in catalysis and energy-related fields due to their fascinating properties. However, the controllable synthesis of porous carbon with refined morphology is still a formidable challenge due to inevitable aggregation/fusion of resulted carbon particles during the high-temperature synthetic process. Herein, a hierarchically oriented carbon-structured (fiber-like) composite is fabricated by simultaneously taking advantage of a confined pyrolysis strategy and disparate bond environments within metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). In the resultant composite, the oriented carbon provides a fast mass (molecule/ion/electron) transfer efficiency; the doping-N atoms can anchor or act as active sites; the mesoporous SiO2 (mSiO2 ) shell not only effectively prevents the derived carbon or active metal nanoparticles (NPs) from aggregation or leaching, but also acts as a "polysulfide reservoir" in the Li-S batteries to suppress the "shuttle" effect. Benefiting from these advantages, the synthesized composite Pd@NDHPC@mSiO2 (NDHPC means N-doped hierarchically porous carbon) exhibits extremely high catalytic activity and stability toward the one-pot Knoevenagel condensation-hydrogenation reaction. Furthermore, the oriented NDHPC@mSiO2 manifests a boosted capacity and cycling stability in Li-S batteries compared to the counterpart that directly pyrolyzes without silica protection. This report provides an effective strategy of fabricating hierarchically oriented carbon composites for catalysis and energy storage applications.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To introduce a tooth-supported personalized template-assisted foramen ovale (FO) puncture system for trigeminal neuralgia (TN) treatment, analyze its advantages, and review other previously reported methods. METHODS: Sixty-seven patients were included. According to the preoperative digital design, the personalized puncture path was determined. Then, a tooth-supported personalized template was designed and manufactured. Finally, surgery (radiofrequency thermocoagulation or balloon compression) was carried out with the assistance of the template. The puncture effect and puncture-associated complications were evaluated, and the related literature was reviewed. RESULTS: The FO was successfully punctured in one attempt in all patients. The procedure was completed in 15 s in 35 (52.24%) patients and in 15-30 s in 28 (41.79%) patients. The required position was accurately reached in all patients, and the center point error range was within 1 mm. No complications associated with puncture occurred. CONCLUSION: The tooth-supported personalized template-assisted FO puncture system reported in this paper is an exceedingly simple, highly effective and safe FO puncture method that is worth popularizing.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Neurovascular compression (NVC) is hypothesized to be the main pathogenic factor of trigeminal neuralgia (TN). Microvascular decompression (MVD) has become a popular surgery for TN, and the success rate depends on the degree of NVC. As the routine examination before MVD, magnetic resonance tomographic angiography (MRTA) shows high sensitivity for detecting NVC. However, there are no reports on the sensitivity of MRTA for assessing the degree of NVC. METHODS: This study aimed to evaluate the sensitivity of MRTA for determining the degree of NVC by comparing preoperative MRTA and intraoperative endoscopy findings. A total of 480 patients who suffered from TN and underwent MVD were included. Their preoperative MRTA and intraoperative endoscopy findings were reviewed. The kappa test was used to identify similarities between the MRTA and endoscopy findings. RESULTS: The degree of NVC on preoperative MRTA was similar to that on endoscopy (kappa = 0.770). The number of offending vessels according to preoperative MRTA was coincident with that according to endoscopy (kappa = 0.722). CONCLUSION: MRTA had high sensitivity for detecting not only the presence of NVC but also the degree of NVC.

RESUMO

Parry-Romberg syndrome is a rare craniofacial disorder characterized by progressive hemifacial atrophy with systematic manifestations. The combination with hemimasticatory spasm is rare, with only 9 patients reported before. In this study, a study of a young male patient with Parry-Romberg syndrome and hemimasticatory spasm on his left side was presented. Radiologic examinations showed severe atrophy limited to subcutaneous tissue and electromyography demonstrated as hemimasticatory spasm. Injection of botulinum toxin type A was applied for the treatment of hemimasticatory spasm and after 2 separated injections, the patient was significantly relieved from symptom. The theory of focal demyelination of the trigeminal nerve peripheral brunches is the possible link between hemifacial atrophy and hemimasticatory spasm, although the pathogenesis of both diseases requires further study and current therapeutic methods are still limited to symptomatic treatments. Injection of botulinum toxin type A is an effective way to treat hemimasticatory spasm and autologous fat transplant is a promising solution to correct facial asymmetry.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Poor medication adherence is one of the most important factors underlying uncontrolled blood pressure, and ensuing hypertension is the leading risk factor for stroke. However, the influence of prestroke medication nonadherence on the admission blood pressure of patients with hypertension who have had an ischemic stroke remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: The aims of this study were to explore the influence of medication nonadherence on the admission blood pressure of patients with hypertension who have had an ischemic stroke and to analyze the reasons for medication nonadherence preceding stroke. METHODS: A sample population of 301 patients with hypertension who have had an ischemic stroke was recruited. A questionnaire was used to investigate sociodemographic data and reasons for nonadherence. The 4-item Medication Adherence Scale was used to investigate prestroke medication adherence. Blood pressure was measured upon patient admission. Logistic regression analysis was used to identify factors influencing adherence. RESULTS: In this cohort, 80.73% of the patients exhibited uncontrolled blood pressure on admission, and 26.58% had undiagnosed hypertension. Of the patients aware of their diagnosis, 75.11% were nonadherent and 10.40% had never used antihypertensive medicines. Uncontrolled admission blood pressure was positively influenced by medication nonadherence. The main causes of nonadherence included forgetfulness (58.08%), lack of belief in the need for long-term antihypertensive treatment (27.27%), and no awareness of the importance of long-term medication (24.75%). CONCLUSIONS: Stroke education in China should focus on patients' poor understanding of the importance for sustained antihypertensive medication adherence to improve blood pressure control and prevent stroke.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: We sought to introduce our classification and reconstruction protocol for skull base erosions in the temporomandibular joint and skull base region. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients with neoplasms in the temporomandibular joint and skull base region treated from January 2006 to March 2017 were reviewed. Skull base erosion was classified into 3 types according to the size of the defect. RESULTS: We included 33 patients, of whom 5 (15.2%) had type I defects (including 3 in whom free fat grafts were placed and 2 in whom deep temporal fascial fat flaps were placed). There were 8 patients (24.2%) with type II defects, all of whom received deep temporal fascial fat flaps. A total of 20 patients (60.6%) had type III defects, including 17 in whom autogenous bone grafts were placed, 1 in whom titanium mesh was placed, and 2 who received total alloplastic joints. The mean follow-up period was 50 months. All of the patients exhibited stable occlusion and good facial symmetry. No recurrence was noted. CONCLUSIONS: Our classification and reconstruction principles allowed reliable morpho-functional skull base reconstruction.
